Gooch & Housego, the global optical components and systems manufacturer is stepping up production of components at its fiber optics facilities due to problems in the global supply chain caused by flooding in Thailand.

Both the G&H Torquay site and recent acquisition EM4 were founded during the Telecom boom of the late 1990’s and the type of components they manufacture today have a telecommunications heritage. As the vast majority of the manufacture of standard fiber optical components for this industry migrated to the Far East, both G&H Torquay and EM4 diversified into new markets including Avionic & Defense, Industrial Applications and Biomedical.

Dr Andrew Robertson, Senior Vice President commented, “Both our sites in Boston and Torquay manufacture components based on telecom technology, in fact Torquay still manufactures many high reliability fused couplers for submarine cables today and our components are still designed-in to many telecoms modules. G&H supply passive components including fused fiber tap couplers, WDMs, multimode-combiners and fiber collimators as well as single and multimode pump lasers and high power DFB transmission lasers.”

G&H is currently reviewing RFQs for standard telecommunication fiber optic components and the company possesses the requisite skills and equipment to ramp up capacity rapidly without the need to invest in additional resources.

In January 2011, EM4 Inc, Boston MA, USA was acquiredby Gooch and Housego (G&H). EM4, is an excellent fit in terms of its optoelectronic technology that provides market leading laser and photodetector components, modules and sub systems.

G&H’s rationale for the acquisition was that we can now offer the highest performance Fibre Optics product portfolio available. In addition, while EM4 is a key supplier within the whole photonics industry, it is particularly successful in Aerospace and Defence within the US.

To enhance things further, G&H are duplicating our Fused capability at the EM4 site in Boston. Manufacturing Fused Fibre Optics products in the US has been a long term intention for G&H. Our objective, to be more active in the US Aerospace and Defence market. At present, activity in this key market is restricted as Export Regulations and ITAR in particular restrict our ability to do business via our base in the UK.

In Boston we are currently commissioning multiple fused rigs capable of the following; 0.1 FIT Single Mode Coupler, High Power, Multimode Combiner and Polarisation Maintaining, plus the associated test equipment and will be able to undertake the full range of fused variants already offered in the UK. Once underway, sourcing and ongoing engineering development of fused products controlled under ITAR will be undertaken fully within the US.

Following the success of its EM600 DFB laser with integrated current and TEC control, EM4 has now launched a version that allows temperature tuning.

The new product - EM650 - is an ultra-low noise device that integrates 14 pin packaged DFB's with a versatile current and TEC controller.

This enables users to easily integrate fiber coupled DFB sources into their systems. The EM650's form factor is extremely small and it is easy to interface to.
